A Story of Strength

The Survivor Tractor is a fully restored vintage tractor dedicated to raising funds for cancer research. Every year, the tractor has been auctioned to a new buyer, with 100% of the funds going to various cancer charities. This year, New Holland brought Survivor Tractor back home to begin a new journey of giving.

Ovarian Cancer Survivor Overcomes Her Greatest Fear

She thought it was just a routine annual exam. But when 43-year-old Jennifer Helle left her doctor’s office on a hot summer’s day in 2014, she had no idea that she would soon be facing her greatest fear.

“During the exam, the doctor said he felt something and sent me for an ultrasound,” says Jennifer. “It showed a growth on my left ovary that was the size of a grapefruit. I had no symptoms. I had no idea that I was going to have my world blow up in my face that day.”

The doctor scheduled her for a CT scan the next week. “And of course, your head is racing,” she says. “I sat in my car for 45 minutes talking with my mother and crying. I said, “What if this is cancer?’ We have no history of cancer in our family, but that was the greatest fear in my life.”

Five weeks later, Jennifer was facing surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. “When they opened me up, the surgeon was shocked. They found that my left ovary had the grapefruit-sized mass, and in that five-week span, an apple-sized mass had grown on my right ovary.”

At her three-week post-op appointment, it was confirmed: Jennifer had Stage 1 ovarian cancer. While she still recovering from surgery, the doctors recommended chemotherapy.

“I’m a nurse by trade, so I know a little bit about that whole process. Even though I did not want chemo, I knew I had to do it. I had to be here for my children, my husband and my family. It’s not going to be fun, but I have to do this.”

Three years after that fateful day in 2014, Jennifer is a survivor. “I didn’t think I could ever go through cancer, that it would do me in. But as history has proven, I’m here. I’m feeling good now, and I keep praying that it will continue.”

The Survivor Tractor has a special link to Jennifer. Her husband Mike’s family owns Helle Farm Equipment, a New Holland dealership in Dyersville, Iowa.

“The Survivor Tractor and New Holland’s support for cancer survivors is really awesome. I think people’s voices need to be heard, and there needs to be an awareness of just how huge cancer is in our world. Cancer is out there, and there are people who have gone through it and can live normal lives and get back to being healthy. But we need people to support cancer research and cancer awareness. It makes me feel good that New Holland is recognizing the importance of this. If it can be brought to people’s attention, be it through a tractor, a poster or whatever, that’s wonderful.”

#SurvivorTractor

People are talking about Survivor Tractor and their personal survivor stories. Feel free to join the conversation using #SurvivorTractor.

A dusty Ford 9N tractor sat idle in an old barn in southern Maryland. Its days of working in the field were over, but it was now ready to take on a new challenge as a symbol of strength and hope in the face of adversity.

This tractor was destined to become The Survivor Tractor, a fully restored tractor painted a brilliant shade of purple; the universal color of hope for cancer survivors. The idea was the brainchild of Charles Beaver, farmer and owner of Still Creek Vineyards in historic St. Mary’s County, Md. Like so many families, the Beaver family had been touched by cancer.

Charles knew the fine work of the Cancer Support Group and wanted to give back to an organization that had given so much to his family. Living in an area steeped in history and agriculture, where antique tractors are especially treasured, he distributed flyers explaining his mission and asking for a vintage tractor donation. A gentleman who wished to remain anonymous came forward and donated the Ford 9N, while a local collision shop donated the repairs and a new paint job.

Since 2014, The Survivor Tractor has been bought and sold over and over again through the auction community. Each time, 100 percent of the proceeds were donated to charity. Recipients included an elementary school, a young girl battling a rare neurological disorder, families struggling with medical expenses and charities involved in the fight against cancer. In 2016, New Holland Agriculture purchased The Survivor. Thanks to a matching donation from Wolgemuth Auction, the sale resulted in a $32,000 donation to the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute at Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster, Pa. New Holland Agriculture is celebrating the next phase of The Survivor's journey with a campaign of giving throughout 2017 in honor of the 100th anniversary of the first mass-produced tractor.

In an effort to raise funds for the American Cancer Society, the Survivor appeared at the Pennsylvania Farm Show, took a parade lap around the Daytona International Speedway at the Daytona 500, and will be traveling North America, stopping at New Holland dealerships, farm shows, and other events, all with the mission of raising funds to support cancer education, research and the search for a cure.
